What the Healthy Homes Standards Say About Heating

Since 1 July 2021, all rental properties must meet specific heating, insulation, ventilation, and moisture control requirements. The heating standard focuses on the main living area, where tenants spend most of their time.

Here’s what that means in plain English:

  • The main living room must be able to reach at least 18°C (as recommended by the World Health Organisation).
  • The heater must be fixed in place, not portable.
  • It must be 1.5kW or more and capable of heating the room to the required temperature.
  • If you use a heat pump, it must include a thermostat to regulate the temperature.
