Why a Heat Pump Hot Water Cylinder Makes Sense

still heating your water the old way?

Your hot water cylinder could be costing you more than it should.

Water heating makes up around 30% of the average Kiwi home's power bill. If you're still running an old electric resistance cylinder, there's a good chance you're paying more than you need to. A heat pump hot water cylinder uses the same clever technology as your heat pump, moving heat from the air instead of generating it from scratch, so you get the same hot water for a fraction of the running cost.

Big savings, smaller power bill

Heat pump hot water systems use around 60-75% less electricity than a standard electric resistance cylinder. Instead of burning power through an element, they draw free heat from the surrounding air, so your cylinder does most of the work using energy that's already there. Carrier's own testing on their Blue range shows savings of up to 77% in the right conditions, on top of a 10-year residential warranty for extra peace of mind.

How it actually works

It sounds technical, but the idea is simple. For every 1kW of power you put in, a heat pump can produce over 4kW of heat, a performance efficiency of around 400%. Compare that to a standard electric cylinder, which can only ever convert 1kW of power into 1kW of heat. That difference is where the savings come from.

Reliable hot water, whatever the weather

A good heat pump hot water system is built to handle a real Wairarapa winter, running in ambient temperatures as low as -7°C, with built-in frost protection to stop the condenser icing up. You get the same reliable hot water all day and night, no matter what's happening outside.

Smart control, simple to live with

Modern systems come with a handy controller for temperature, timer, and safety lock settings, plus app control that works with Alexa and Google Home. If the power goes out, a power outage memory function means your settings pick up right where they left off, no re-programming required.

Fully installed, no hassle

We handle the whole job, including the plumbing. We work with a trusted plumbing subcontractor who takes care of that side of the installation, so you're not left arranging a separate tradesperson or juggling bookings. One team, one visit, sorted.

We have used Michael for the past 10 years for our electrical needs, from smaller jobs like adding double plugs and moving lights to full electrical wiring for our home extension as well as installing all our heat pumps. We have always been impressed with his communication, punctuation and keen eye for detail. We also like how he keeps everything clean and tidy as he works. We could not recommend him enough

Michael was awesome at listening to what I wanted from a heat pump and where I wanted it placed in our annexe. He was prompt, courteous, provided a fair quote compared to other local providers, turned up when he said he would, tidied up after himself, ended up doing a couple of other little electrical jobs whilst here too. Would happily recommend Michael’s professional service to others.
